2005 Articulation Committee Meeting Summary
The following is a short summary of the minutes submitted by each articulation committee for meetings held in 2005. Each year, BCCAT collects and reviews these minutes, and prepares a short summary of each set of minutes received. This annual meeting summary provides a brief and broad overview of the activities and issues articulation committees discuss in their meetings over the year.
ABE Computing Studies
2005 Meeting: TBA

Enrolments in ABE Computing courses were reported to be dropping at many institutions, possible rationales behind this were thought to be rising tuition, a general downturn in the industry and an increasing level of general computer literacy in students entering into post-secondary studies. The ABE Online working group suggests this mode of delivery as a possible remedy for declining enrolments. Some confusion was expressed surrounding the articulation of BCcampus courses.
ABE Education and Career Planning Working Group
2005 Meeting: February 10, 2005
2006 Meeting: February 9 & 10, 2006 - Douglas College
The group reviewed and revised its goal statement and outline for the Articulation Handbook. The group also discussed the possible implications of universities' new core skills requirements, such as the WQB requirements of SFU. Steps were discussed that might help to build core skills into the ABE curriculum.
ABE English
2005 Meeting: March 10 & 11, 2005
2006 Meeting: March 9 & 10, 2006 - Vancouver Community College
Questions were raised whether on-line delivery courses need to be articulated again. Discussion ensued regarding the fundamental learners on-line, and other issues, but members suggested all required outcomes can be met in an on-line delivery with a bit of creativity. There was discussion concerning the Premier's Advisory Panel on Literacy. The group, in support of a letter written by the Fundamental ABE Working Group moved that both Literacy BC and the Deans and Directors of Developmental Programs be urged to advocate for change to current government policy regarding access to education for adult literacy level students.
ABE First Nations

2006 Meeting: March 30 & 31, 2006 - College of the Rockies
Co-Chair, Judy Thompson, provided a brief history of the formation of the FN Articulation Committee. Discussions ensued regarding identification of standards for "indigenization" and "suitability" of courses with First Nations content, and initial work began on identifying learning outcomes for those courses. To develop to reflect the true nature of First Nations education throughout the province and its practice at the ABE level, the committee resolved to work with the First Nations Studies committee. Judy Thompson stepped down as co-chair for the coming year.
ABE Fundamental Working Group
2005 Meeting: March 3 & 4, 2005
2006 Meeting: March 2 & 3, 2006 - University of the Fraser Valley
Two representatives of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development were present who outlined the Premier's plan to improve literacy in the province. It was stressed that the colleges are seen as playing an important role in literacy. Online learning for fundamental level ABE was also discussed, and the group expressed reservations about a solely online learning model for students at the fundamental level. The group also discussed a letter sent on their behalf to the Deans and Directors expressing concerns about access issues for literacy level students on income assistance.
ABE Mathematics

2006 Meeting: March 2-3, 2006 Native Education Centre
Institutions reported declining ABE enrolments in relation to increased tuition fees. There were also reports that students are experiencing difficulty with UBC, SFU and UVIC recognizing ABE courses in the admissions process, and UBC will no longer accept ABE provincial level math. There was discussion surrounding BCCAT's Course Outline Template, which was found to be useful.
ABE Science

2006 Meeting: March 9-10, 2006 Kwantlen, Richmond Campus
Elizabeth Ritch stepped down as Chair and Gary Lawrence of VCC took over. Science sub-committees reported that students are having trouble when trying to take their provincial and advanced level ABE credits forward for university admissions. A motion was passed by the committee to ask BCCAT to act toward improving this situation.

2006 Meeting: March 30 & 31, 2006 - Vancouver Community College
The Thompson Rivers University has renamed their ABE department - "University Prep". Members expressed confusion about the articulation of online courses, and decided to send the issue to the ABE steering committee for a system-wide response.

2005 Meeting: April 22, 2005
2006 Meeting: April 20-21, 2006 - Malaspina University College
Thorne Won of BCcampus gave a presentation on online program development and answered some questions that the committee had in this regard. The committee also discussed the impacts of changes to the Federal funding structure for First Nations Bands on ABE enrolments and students. The 2006 meeting dates for ABE working groups and the steering committee were determined.
Adult Special Education
2005 Meeting: June 2 & 3, 2005
2006 Meeting: February 22 & 23, 2006 - Coast Plaza Hotel, Vancouver
It was reported that enrolments were declining and FTE targets were down by 8%. Representatives present from the Ministry of Advanced Education told of the possibility that an ASE outcomes survey might be conducted in the coming year. A representative from the Canadian Mental Health Association delivered a presentation on mental health first aid. The role of School Districts working in the Adult Education field regarding literacy was discussed. Following the meeting, an ASE articulation services meeting took place.
Adventure Tourism

In order for members to have a better understanding of the different areas of specialization available in adventure tourism programs, the Chair undertook to distribute a questionnaire on the subject. The issue of age requirements for admission into adventure tourism programs was also discussed.
Agriculture/Horticulture
2005 1st Meeting: June 1, 2005
The group discussed the role of HortEducationBC (HEBC) and a representative from HEBC was present to deliver an informational session on this organization. Two members of the committee were elected to serve on HEBC's board of directors as articulation reps. Issues of student recruitment and admissions requirements among institutions were also discussed.
2005 2nd Meeting: November 18, 2005
2006 Meeting: June, 2006 - University of British Columbia
Ongoing developments with the Industry Training Authority regarding management and funding of apprenticeship and ELTT programs were discussed. An update was given by HEBC, and HEBC and the articulation committee undertook to develop a paper to present to the ITA with respect to program length. There was brief discussion around the issue of linking recruiting efforts among horticulture schools.
American Sign Language
2005 Meeting: April 1, 2005
2006 Meeting: April 7, 2006 - VCC
Much of the discussion at the 2005 meeting concerned the Provincial Mastery Exams. Following the discussion, it was decided that the Preparatory Level ASL Provincial Mastery Exam would no longer be a requirement as of April 2005, and that successful completion of assessment and record to proceed at each level of Prep will serve as the credential.
Applied Business Technology/Office Administration
2005 1st Meeting: May 5 & 6, 2005
Coordinators reported how different colleges handled their ABT/OA practicum, and discussion around inconsistencies in grade scales among institutions followed. A report on events and discussion at BCCAT's annual meeting of articulation chairs was given. A report on the maintenance of the ABT Transfer Matrix was given, and it was decided that the committee would working towards integrating online and onsite transfer credits. The meeting also involved an extensive discussion of evaluation in online course.
2005 2nd Meeting: October 18 & 19, 2005
2006 Meeting: April 26-28 or May 3-5, 2006 - Douglas College
BCcampus representatives were present as guests to discuss registration models, and FTE counting models. Other online issues such as textbooks and credentials for online courses were discussed. Updates to the BCCAT ABT Transfer Guide was reviewed and approved, and a new vice-chair, Shannon Bezo, was elected.
Auto Parts and Light Warehousing

2006 Meeting: TBA
The group discussed the status of apprenticeship and Entry Level Trades Training programs at Kwantlen and TRU. Apprenticeships have been decreasing in general. The committee discussed combining Auto parts, Industrial Engines and Warehousing into one program, and moved to recommend to the Industry Training Authority that the name "Industrial Engines" be changed to "Heavy Duty". The group also discussed issues surrounding the Red Seal certification.
Business and Commerce

2006 Meeting: May 5 & 6 - Douglas College
Finola Finlay from BCCAT attended this meeting where the Business and Commerce Articulation Committees merged forming one committee from the two, resolving to retain the leadership and SLPs from both committees for the upcoming year. Support was shown for a block transfer initiative of the BC Business Deans. This initiative will also be discussed at a meeting of the business transfer guide subcommittee in October 2005.
Carpentry
2005 Meeting: June 21 & 22, 2005
2006 Meeting: TBA - Malaspina University College
The committee discussed their desire to have secondary schools participate in articulation, noting that this becomes increasingly critical as more schools participate in apprenticeship. A report from the Industry Training Authority was presented and discussed. Discussion surrounding the future of apprenticeships and their relationship to students resulted after a presentation was given by a guest speaker present as "a concerned citizen for the trade".
Chemistry

2006 Meeting: May 12, 2006 - Malaspina University College
The group discussed such issues as Advanced Placement credits and SFU's new WQB requirements. A new chair and system liaison person were selected, and a representative from the ABE Chemistry sub-committee addressed the group. Although there was conversation around BCCAT's available funding for Transfer Innovations projects, the group agreed that such projects were not suitable for chemistry.
Communications
2005 Meeting: May 5 & 6, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 11 & 12, 2006 - College of New Caledonia
Conversation focused on new developments at BCCAT, the need for a System Liaison Person (SLP), the ongoing need for university representation on the committee, a proposed Transfer Innovations Grant, liaison with other articulation committees, prerequisites for first year communications courses, and issues related to spoken communications. The committee also discussed issues pertaining to listserve use.
Computing Education
2005 Meeting: May 5, 2005
2006 Meeting: October 27 & 28, 2006 - Simon Fraser University
Many institutions reported low enrollment in computing education programs, and discussion ensued as to whether declining enrolment was a North American or worldwide phenomenon. The committee passed a motion to approach BCCAT for possible funding of a proposed project for establishing common standards and outcomes for computer literacy courses.
Creative Writing
2005 Meeting: May 6, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 4 & 5 - North Island College
Following a round of institutional reports, the committee discussed issues with the rapid growth of online courses, including articulation and quality control. A brief discussion surrounding the need to increase institutional representation on the committee also occurred. Desire for the inclusion of a representative from the k-12 system was also expressed.
Criminology
2005 Meeting: May 19 & 20, 2005
2006 Meeting: TBA - University College of the Fraser Valley
David Marshall, president of Mount Royal College in Calgary, joined the group and gave a presentation about the continuing evolution of that institution and of the role of the college in post-secondary education. A roundtable on the topic of emerging issues in criminology and criminal justice education was followed by conversation surrounding research collaboration.
Dental Educators (Sub-Committee on Dental Hygiene)
2005 Meeting: April 21 & 22, 2005
2006 Meeting: April 20 & 21 - TBA (Victoria)
It was decided to invite private school to participate in articulation in order to foster the relationship between all dental hygiene schools in BC. International partnerships and scholarship opportunities were discussed, as were immunization policies. Grade scales and attrition rates among different institutions' diploma programs were reviewed.
Early Childhood Education
2005 Meeting: May 5 & 6, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 4 & 5 - North Island College
The committee thanked Marjo Wheat for her 20 years of service on the Articulation Committee, and then elected a new System Liaison Person, Kathryn McNaughton. The committee discussed briefly the participation of private institutions, and policies, practices and dilemmas regarding student admission, student success, student attitudinal/behaviour issues. There was support for developing a position paper that can raise the profile and the need for facilitating movement of ECE graduates into Teacher Education programs.
Earth Science

Much of the discussion at this year's meeting surrounded an ongoing joint Transfer Innovations project with the Geography articulation committee and the updating of a summary of the type of courses needed to satisfy the professional registration requirements as a geologist in BC that is housed on the BCCAT website. The issue of field trip liability was discussed, and the group resolved to advocate the importance of student field trips in the field of geology.
Economics
2005 Meeting: May 2 & 3, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 1& 2, 2006 - University College of the Fraser Valley
The group discussed new undergraduate curriculum requirements at SFU, as well as new economics, business and commerce programs around BC. Considerable discussion took place around the BCCAT Transfer Friendly Course Outline Form. Each member then gave an institutional report, before addressing some questions to UBC regarding undergraduate degree requirements.
Electrical (BCEAC)
2005 Meeting: June 1 & 2, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 30 & 31, 2006 - Thompson Rivers University
The group discussed the issue of a standardized examination, but resolved to recommend that all colleges and institutions support an ITA minimum entrance requirement for electrical apprenticeship training or placement through assessment testing. Geoff Stevens of the ITA was present to speak to the new directions and initiatives of industry training in the province. Issues of curriculum standardization were discussed, as were transfer issues between the provinces of BC and Alberta. The lack of resources for curriculum development and updating of learning resources was noted.
Electronics Engineering Technology

2006 Meeting: TBA, NAIT Edmonton
Many institutional participants reported declining enrolment pressures. There was also discussion over the ITA funding for programs, private trades training, and ideas for raising the profile of Technicians and Technologists within the community. The impact of the splitting of OUC on trades and technology programs was also discussed.
Electronics Technician
2005 Meeting: April 15, 2005
2006 Meeting: April 2006, Thompson Rivers University or BCIT
There was consensus among the group that the Electronics Technician programs do not really fit under the auspices of the Industry Training Authority as there is not trade/apprenticeship funding for them. The committee noted their commitment to send two representatives to the upcoming meeting of Chairs and SLPs in 2006.
Engineering
2005 Meeting: May 6, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 12, 2006 - Thompson Rivers University
It was noted that programs at universities continue to be different enough that first year engineering students cannot easily be offered smooth transfer to more than one institution. UVic is presently examining their core 1st year courses and are actively considering ways to smooth transfer for first year engineering students. UBC-Okanagan's new engineering program was outlined. The need to identify a new representative for the committee from APEGBC was also discussed.
Environmental Programs

2006 Meeting: May 28-30, 2006 - Malaspina University College
Following a round of institutional reports, it was indicated that an election for the position of Chair was necessary. The committee noted that the Environmental Studies Educational Pathways Grid on the BCCAT site needed to be reviewed and updated.

2005 Meeting: May 6, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 2006 - University College of the Fraser Valley
Susan Briggs resigned as Chair and a new Chair, Kent Lewis of Capilano, was elected. A report designed for Grade 12 students was presented and discussed, and suggestions for its revision and distribution were made. Finola Finlay presented BCCAT's latest publication, the How to Articulate Handbook. The possibility of a flexible pre-major analysis project funded through BCCAT's Transfer Innovations fund was discussed and a subcommittee was appointed to lead this initiative.
English as a Second Language
2005 Meeting: November 3, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 25 & 26, 2006 - Thompson Rivers University
Members were asked to comment on the new TOEFL, membership in the Canada Language Council and the use of the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). The group conducted a session where the responsibilities of the committee's working groups were clarified. A motion was made to request that the Deans & Directors group bring forward a proposal to the Ministry to fund a three phase project with an aim to aligning aspects of adult ESL with the CLB. The length of terms for co-chairs was modified.
First Nations Studies
2005 Meeting: May 6, 2005
2006 Meeting: TBA
The committee reviewed its general principles for articulation and discussed the possibility of putting together a shared curriculum resource site that we might use to share ideas and sample course outlines. The new undergraduate curriculum requirements at SFU were reviewed and discussed. The committee then joined a meeting with the anthropology committee, to answer questions about how courses should transfer from Anthropology to First Nations Studies.
Forestry
2005 Meeting: June 1 & 2, 2005
2006 Meeting: June, 2006 - Mesachie Lake
Jennifer Orum of BCCAT joined by teleconference to discuss the importance of ensuring that the Forestry committee's transfer matrix published on the BCCAT website is kept up to date. It was agreed that the committee would await the outcome of a core competency review until actions are taken regarding the matrix and the matrix would temporarily be pulled from the website. The Association of BC Forest Professionals was present to discuss core requirements with the articulation committee.
Geography
2005 Meeting: May 7, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 4-6, 2006 -University of BC, Okanagan
After conversation surrounding matters such as the Geography listserve, website and Descriptive Pathways Transfer Grid, the committee went on to hear institutional reports. Concerns around decreasing enrollments were noted by some participants. Jennifer Orum attended the meeting and gave a presentation on BCCAT's recent developments and publications. The committee moved to recommend that Lyle Courtney be the Systems Liaison Person for the committee.
History
2005 Meeting: April 28, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 8, 2006 - Thompson Rivers University
Anne Gagnon, the outgoing Chair, was succeeded by Marcel Dirk, the committee's co-chair. A new co-chair, Christopher Friedrichs of UBC, was elected. The committee discussed issues ranging from private-public articulation to instructor qualifications. The possibility of developing a website for the use of the committee was raised, and the committee undertook to look further into the resources that BCCAT might be able to provide toward this initiative.
Home Support/Resident Care Attendant
2005 Meeting: April 15, 2005
Sandi McGladdery of the University College of the Fraser Valley took over the position of Chair of the committee. Representatives from industry were in attendance and highlighted that the demand for graduates and skilled workers was not being met. The Canadian English Language Benchmark for Nurses assessment was discussed among the group as a possible tool for addressing the issue of poor English skills.

2006 Meeting: April 6 & 7, 2006
Reports were given from associations, Ministry representatives and colleges. Options for increasing the desirability of HS/RCA careers were discussed. The group also reviewed the curriculum and identified its strong areas, as well as areas that could be added or expanded.
Hospitality

2006 Meeting: TBA
The groups discussed changes to the organizational structure of the Tourism Education Consortium, and hospitality board members were selected for the TEC. The group also discussed its plans to develop three distance courses with BCcampus. Best practices were reviewed, and a comparison of textbooks and learning resources took place.
Human Service Programs
2005 Meeting: June 13-15, 2005
2006 Meeting: June 5-7, 2006 -University College of the Fraser Valley
This committee has sub-sectors in Child and Youth Care, Social Services, and Classroom and Community Support Services. The Classroom and Community Support Services group reviewed and revised a draft matrix of competencies and how courses from various institutions fit. This would be posted on the BCCAT web-site when it is completed. Transferability issues were also discussed, in particular in relation to practicum, on-line courses and communications courses.
Licensed Practical Nursing
2005 1st Meeting: May 12, 2005
Stephanie Oldford of BCCAT was present to give an outline on new activities and publications from BCCAT. Other sector organizations, such as the College and Association of LPNs, the Nursing Directorate and some Health Authorities were also present. One member of the committee from Sprott-Shaw Community College represents private colleges that provide LPN programs. Conversation surrounding the issue of program accreditation took place, as the Nursing Directorate advised that program accreditation is not required under legislation. The committee voiced concerns for quality assurance and consistency in the absence of a method of program accreditation. New exam competencies and curriculum changes were also discussed.

2006 Meeting: March 23, 2006 - Vancouver Community College
A representative from the Nursing Directorate gave a report, and concerns were voiced around the process through which entry to practice competencies were being developed. The need to work out a process for private colleges' representation on the committee was discussed. The need to update the BC curriculum vis-Ã -vis preparation for the national exam was visited, as were the BC Practical Nurse competencies.
Mathematics and Statistics (BCCUPMS)
2005 Meeting: May 26 & 27, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 16-18, 2006 - UVic
The committee reviewed a letter that had been sent on its behalf to all school districts to encourage them to include numeracy and early numeracy as goals in their education plans, and a letter from BCCAT praising these efforts. The issue of students storing information in their graphic calculators was discussed, as were other types of academic dishonesty. Conversation ensued surrounding the comparative performance of students who take different paths in mathematics study. Participants spoke about the online courses offered in their departments.
Media and Communication Studies

2006 Meeting: May 26, 2006 - University College of the Fraser Valley
The committee discussed the forthcoming undergraduate WQB requirements at SFU. Following a conversation about the possibility of obtaining funding through BCCAT's Transfer and Articulation projects fund, the committee moved to submit an application for funding to develop a website to facilitate its communications and work. A motion to extend the membership of the committee to include program chairs of digital and new media programs was also passed.
Millwrights
2005 Meeting: October 7, 2005
2006 Meeting: October 7, 2006 - Selkirk College
Geoff Stevens and Lindsay Langill from the Industry Training Authority (ITS) were present and gave a presentation on the Industry Training Program Profile. A committee member demonstrated an ITA report form application that he had developed, and Geoff Stevens suggested that the demonstrated be replicated at the next Dean's meeting. There was discussion around the need to update the Millwright manual, and the group elected to send one of its members to Ottawa for the National Occupational Analysis workshop.
Modern Languages ( S.C.O.L.A)
2005 Meeting: April 29, 2005
2006 Meeting: April 28, 2006 - Capilano University
The committee supported a development that would see the acceptance of American Sign Language as a first-year language equivalent in one of its institutions. The committee moved to recommend that administrators of colleges and universities in BC show a commitment to educational technology by creating a position of Educational Technologist in all language departments. The committee's Terms of Reference were reviewed, and new programs offered at some institutions were presented for discussion.
Music
2005 Meeting: May 6, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 5, 2006 - Trinity Western University
There was much discussion surrounding what quality controls existed for private colleges offering transferable courses. Clarification surrounding BCCAT's policies and practices with private institutions and articulation was given, as well as resources that members could consult for further information. Presentations from two book publishers were also delivered.
Outdoor Power Equipment/Motorcycle/Marine
2005 Meeting: October 3, 2005
2006 Meeting: April 3, 2006 - Malaspina University College
This group had not met since the Fall of 2002, and had gone through some uncertainty about its role following the restructuring of the ITA. Following a round of institutional reports, the committee discussed learning resources, textbooks and video. Gerry Lengert, the committee's SLP, advised each institution and program to meet with their program advisory committees for input. There was also discussion surrounding the possibility of an enrolment survey.
Philosophy
2005 Meeting: May 6, 2005
2006 Meeting: June 5, 2006 - Capilano University
A conversation surrounding the role of education councils in university college and college governance took place. Discussion took place on whether declining enrolments were common among universities and colleges/university colleges, universities reported their enrolments were healthy. The group also discussed the new WQB requirements in the undergraduate curriculum at SFU.
Physical Education and Kinesiology Articulation (BCPEKA)
2005 Meeting: May 17, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 16-18, 2006 - College of New Caledonia
Initiatives to put block transfer agreements into place were discussed, as well as a fledgling program proposal for Douglas to offer a Bachelor's degree in applied sport science. The group selected Peter Moyls of Thompson Rivers University to take over as Chair in 2007, and Milton William will have completed his term in 2006.
Physics and Astronomy

2006 Meeting: May 5, 2006 - Okanagan College
The committees new System Liaison Person, Ann MacArthur of BCIT, was introduced. Each institution reported any significant curriculum changes or issues. The committee reviewed the BCCAT Position Statement on Instructor Qualifications, and it was suggested that this statement might be useful as guidance for private colleges which may be set up in the future and which wish to join the Articulation system. A member of the Division of Physics Education/CAP Undergraduate Physics Project committee gave a PowerPoint presentation on the committee's work and on its reports.
Piping Trades
2005 Meeting: June 16 & 17, 2005
2006 Meeting: TBA
The system liaison person discussed Industry Training Authority concerns, it was resolved that the committee send a letter requesting that plumbing and piping trades outlines be revised. Â The committee also discussed the importance of program advisory committees. Rod Lidstone updated the committee on a proposal for creating an articulation website for piping trades. The group moved on to discuss entrance requirements and assessment methods used at various institutions.
Political Science
2005 Meeting: April 28, 2005
2006 Meeting: April 2006, Malaspina University College
The committee discussed its current vacancy in the System Liaison Person role and undertook to canvas for suitable candidates for the position. Reports were given from both the BC Political Studies Association and the Sub-Committee on Education Faculties Admission Policies. The committee recommended that he sub-committee on Education Faculties' Admission Policies be directed to put together a group of senior persons to lobby the College of Teachers and the Ministry of Education to ask that political science become a "teachable subject" in light of civics classes taught in the high school curriculum.
Professional Cook Training

Dave Donaldson was introduced as the new Systems Liaison Person for the committee. Following a round of institutional reports, new cook training videos were discussed. Discussion took place that compared the programs at different institutions in terms of their structure and length. Apprenticeship issues were also discussed, and it was proposed that high rates of attrition in apprenticeship may be attributed to difficulty for students in obtaining credit for apprenticeship. The importance of gaining industry support and involvement in the colleges was stressed.
Psychology

The meeting also included some professional development activities for psychology representatives. Listserv maintenance and use was discussed. Concern was expressed over the absence of representation from OUC/UBC-O or Okanagan College, particularly in light of the transformation of those institutions. The issue of instructor qualifications was also discussed.
Sheet Metal

Following a round of institutional reports, the group discussed issues such as inter-provincial exams and links with high school trades programs. Conversation took place on the subject of possible curriculum revision and updating, and it was decided that they would look into what is most needed in the curriculum. It was agreed that next year's meeting would take place at the Sheet Metal Workers Training Centre in Burnaby.
Sociology/Anthropology
2005 Meeting: May 6, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 5, 2006 - Capilano
It was resolved that, based on the report of the findings of the group's Flexible Pre-Major Analysis project, that a further application be submitted to BCCAT for funding to implement the Flexible Pre-Major. BCCAT's Jennifer Orum, who was present at the meeting, indicated BCCAT's support for the continuation of the initiative. Following the meeting of the Sociology/Anthropology group, a joint meeting was conducted with the First Nations Studies Articulation Committee to discuss the challenges of articulating interdisciplinary FNST (ABST) courses with sociology and anthropology courses.
Theatre

New degree programs or minors in Theatre are either approved or being proposed by TRU, TWU, MUC and one collaborative program by Langara. A representative from ABCDE notes that high school programs in drama and dance suffer more from budget cuts than do art and music. David Edwards was selected as incoming co-chair of the committee.
Tourism

Following a round of institutional reports, a presentation was given by Terry Hood, a guest speaker to the meeting from the BC Centre for Tourism Leadership and Innovation. The discussion then turned to the positions of Chair and Co-Chair for the Tourism Education Consortium, which were open to nominations. It was resolved that a review of the tourism core curriculum would be undertaken. A call for papers for the upcoming Travel and Tourism Research Association conference was expressed.
Visual Arts
2005 Meeting: May 5 & 6, 2005
2006 Meeting: May 4 &5, 2006 - North Island College
Following a round of institutional reports, the committee went on to discuss the issue of grade inflation in the visual arts field and different approaches that were being taken to control the phenomenon. The committee reviewed current English language prerequisites and discussed whether these requirements were sufficient to ensure student performance and safety in arts programs. A discussion on the role of technology in visual arts began, and will be continued at the 2006 meeting.
Welding
2005 Meeting: May 31 & June 1, 2005
2006 Meeting: TBA -Malaspina University College
Guests were present from BCCAT, the Queen's Printer and the Canadian Welding Bureau. Much of the discussion involved a proposal to raise revenue to fund curriculum and print material updating through raising revenue in partnership with the Queen's Printer. A subcommittee was appointed to develop an operational plan for this initiative, which may provide other trades and technical areas a means to raise funds for curriculum development. The committee also discussed challenge testing and international standards.
